The Schoolcraft College Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees serves as the policy-making body for Schoolcraft College. Established through the state legislature as part of the Community College Act, the Board of Trustees is made up of seven members, all elected by voters of the Schoolcraft Community College District. Each member serves a term of six years.

Meet Our Board Members


Brian Broderick

Brian BroderickBrian Broderick is serving his third term on the board, having been elected to six-year terms in June 1995, 2001 and May 2007. Mr. Broderick is currently serving as Chair of the Board and was Vice Chair from 2008- 2011 and Secretary from 1997-2007.

Mr. Broderick earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Wayne State University in 1998. He is a 1991 graduate of the University of Detroit School of Law and a member of the State Bar of Michigan. Mr. Broderick received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1988.

Mr. Broderick currently serves as the Executive Director of the Michigan Association of Non-public Schools. He is also the Chair of the Michigan Virtual University and Vice Chair of the Education Alliance of Michigan. He is involved in a variety of community activities including serving as a CYO basketball and soccer coach and lector at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Plymouth. Mr. Broderick is a member of the Incorporated Society of Irish-American Lawyers, and is a Past President of the Notre Dame Club of Detroit.

He and his wife, Donna, and their children, Jim and Katherine, reside in Plymouth.


Carol M. Strom

Carol StromCarol Strom was first appointed to the Board in 1994 to fill a vacancy until June of 1995. She was elected in 1995 to complete a two-year unexpired term. She was elected in 1997, 2003 and 2010 to six-year terms. She is currently the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees. Ms. Strom served as Chair from 1999 to 2003. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Michigan.

For 14 years she was a partner in a Livonia gift shop. Her community involvement has included many activities with the local and state PTA. She served one term as State Vice-President for Legislative Activity. She served for four years as a Peer Counselor at Schoolcraft College Women’s Resource Center. She served for 16 years as a member of the Livonia Board of Education and was President of the Board three times. She was President of Pet A Pet Inc., an organization which takes pets to visit hospitals, nursing homes and schools. She served on the Legal Trust Fund of the Michigan Association of School Boards.

Ms. Strom is active in the American Association of University Women, Livonia Branch. She and her husband Cal have four grown children and live in Livonia.


James G. Fausone

Jim FausoneJim Fausone was appointed in July of 2010. He was elected to a six-year term that runs from January 2011 until December 2016. He serves as Secretary. Mr. Fausone received a Juris Doctorate, magna cum laude from Gonzaga University School of Law in 1981. He was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Bachelor’s Degree in Oceanography from the University of Michigan in 1976. He received the 2007 Distinguished Service Award from the Engineering Alumni Society of the University of Michigan College of Engineering.

Mr. Fausone has practiced law in Wayne County since 1981. His practice involves business law, municipal law and veteran disability law. His firm, Fausone Bohn, LLP, has been in Northville since 1995.

His community activities include the Livonia Chamber of Commerce Board, the Canton Community Foundation Board, the University of Michigan College of Engineering Board, the Detroit Board of Water Commissioners, and elected trustee of the Canton Public Library. He is active with a number of veteran advocacy organizations. He and his wife, Carol Ann, a Brigadier General (Ret), reside in Canton.


Joan A. Gebhardt

Joan Gebhardt was elected to serve a full six-year term in May 2007, after being appointed in January 2007. She serves currently as Treasurer of the Board of Trustees. Chair Broderick reappointed her to represent Schoolcraft at the South East Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG). The other members of the SEMCOG Education Bloc elected her to represent them on the Executive Committee, where she was then elected and served as an Officer of the organization for the past five years. This year, Ms. Gebhardt was elected Chair of SEMCOG, the first time that a member of a community college has served as Chair in their history.

Ms. Gebhardt holds a Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Michigan University. Joan also has many post graduate hours from other universities including Wayne State University and Madonna University.

Ms. Gebhardt was elected a Wayne County Commissioner for District 12 (representing Westland, Inkster and south Livonia) for two terms in 2008 and 2010. She is an adjunct professor in Education at Madonna University. Joan retired from public education after serving as a teacher for 10 years, and an administrator for 21 years. As a principal she was elected President of the Taylor local of the American Association of School Administrators. Ms. Gebhardt was appointed by Governor Jennifer Granholm to the Utility Consumers Participation Board, where she was elected Vice-President. Joan is active in the Northwest Detroit League of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women-Livonia Branch.

Ms. Gebhardt and her husband Fred have lived in Livonia since 1979. They have a son Steven and daughter Jennifer, both graduates of Schoolcraft College. They are proud grandparents of Lindsay.


Gretchen Alaniz

Gretchen Alaniz

Gretchen Alaniz was elected to her first six-year term beginning January 2013. Ms. Alaniz earned a Bachelor in Business Administration degree from Central Michigan University in 1984 with a focus in Management Information Systems.

Ms. Alaniz has worked in the Detroit metro area for the last 25 years with increasing responsibility in governance and compliance roles with internal audit organizations in both the utilities and manufacturing industries. She has been a Certified Information Systems Auditor since 1990. Ms. Alaniz currently works in the Internal Audit department as a Senior Manager for TRW Automotive, headquartered in Livonia and ranked among the world's leading automotive suppliers of safety products.

Ms. Alaniz is currently involved in the Livonia Chamber of Commerce serving on the Board of Directors, as well as on the Executive, Scholarship, and Governmental Affairs committees and is involved with the Livonia Industrial Council. She is also past president of the Tri-County Collie Rescue League of Michigan.

Gretchen and her family, daughter Amber and son-in-law Ron, reside in Livonia.


Terry Gilligan

Terry GilliganTerry Gilligan was elected to complete a two-year term beginning January 2013. Mr. Gilligan attended Henry Ford Community College and is a graduate of Pipefitters Local 636 Apprenticeship School. Terry is a 24-year member of the Pipefitters Local and in the last six years has held the elected offices of President and Business Agent. While holding these elected positions he has also served as a Trustee on the Joint Health Insurance Trust Fund, Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee, as well as chairing the Political Action Committee for Local 636. The committee is active in politics at both the local and national level.

Terry is a former Assistant and Head Coach for the Livonia Junior Athletic Baseball League. Terry and his wife Barbara have lived in Livonia for the past 20 years along with their two children Joe and Allyson.


Eric Stempien

Eric StempienEric Stempien was appointed to the Board of Trustees in June 2012 to complete the final year of a six-year term, January 1 – December 31, 2012. He was elected to serve a full six-year term in November of 2012.

Mr. Stempien currently serves as the General Counsel for Superior Air-Ground Ambulance Service. Before working at Superior, Eric was employed at Strategic Public Affairs, a government relations and public policy firm in Novi, Michigan. Prior to his time at SPA, he was the managing partner in a law firm in Northville, Michigan, focusing his practice in the areas of employment litigation, real estate, zoning and land use. Eric earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Michigan in 1994 and a law degree, cum laude, from Wayne State University in 1998.

Eric serves as a case evaluator for United States District Court and the Wayne County Circuit Court. He was also selected to serve on the American Arbitration Association’s Employment Advisory Panel. He is a former member of the Representative Assembly for the State Bar of Michigan. Eric is a past president of the Livonia Jaycees. He lives in Livonia with his wife Mary and two daughters.
