Child Development


Course Description

This course is designed to provide students an overview of life from its beginning through emerging adulthood. The course will concentrate on physical, cognitive, social and emotional development in the prenatal, infancy, toddler, preschool, middle childhood and adolescent periods.

Prerequisites

(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)

  • None.

Course Competencies

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Compare the differences in research methods in the study of human development.
  • Interpret child behavior as it relates to developmental theory.
  • Create an activity based upon cognitive development theory that enhances cognitive development in a child.
  • Explain the Child Protection law as related to mandated reporters.
  • Outline the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development in the prenatal and infancy periods.
  • Outline the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development in the toddler and preschool periods.
  • Outline the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development in the middle childhood period.
  • Outline the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development in the adolescent through emerging adulthood periods.
  • Analyze biological and environmental foundation for child development.
