In this course, the student will explore major theories in adolescent development and use the theoretical constructs to understand adolescent behavior. Students will recognize the contributing factors which lead to the development of a stable identity hierarchy and the development of responsibility in adolescence.
(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)
Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Identify the physical, cognitive, language, and social/emotional characteristics of developing young people.
- Outline the changes that typically occur in the way adolescents relate to parents, other adults and peers as they mature.
- Identify effective communication and guidance techniques to use with adolescents.
- Depict parenting/care giving styles which help adolescent development.
- Summarize parenting/care giving styles which hinder adolescent development.
- Predict social forces that have the ability to affect developing adolescents.
- Identify patterns of identity and personality development.
- Determine problems and disturbances which are deviations from normal adolescent development.
- Explain key concepts in gender and sexuality development in adolescence.
- Verify the Child Protection Law as related to mandated reporters.
