Emergency Medical Technology - Specialist


Course Description

Emergency Medical Technology-Specialist is an approved course that provides the information and experience necessary to prepare the student to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate Licensing Examination. All procedures for the course are evaluated by a physician advisor. This course is designed to teach students how to deal with more complex medical emergency situations than are handled in the basic EMT course (EMT 115). Students develop advanced skills in diagnosis and emergency treatment short of those rendered by physicians or by allied health personnel under the direct supervision of the physician.

Course Competencies

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Explore the introductory aspects of pre-hospital emergency care.
  • Classify the emotional aspects of emergency care, stress management, introduction to critical incident stress debriefing (CISD), scene safety, body substance isolation (BSI), personal protective equipment (PPE), and safety precautions that can be taken prior to performing the role of an EMT-S.
  • Explore the scope of practice, ethical responsibilities, DNR legislation, consent, refusals, abandonment, negligence, duty to act, confidentiality and special situations such as organ donors and crime scenes.
  • Analyze human anatomy and physiology along with understanding how the pathophysiology and disease process will affect patient outcomes in the pre-hospital setting.
  • Acquire knowledge of proper body mechanics, lifting and carrying techniques, principles of moving patients and an overview of patient transfer equipment.
  • Demonstrate airway anatomy and physiology, how to maintain an open patent airway, pulmonary resuscitation, variations for infants and children and patients with laryngectomies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to establish both intravenous and intraosseous cannulation.
  • Characterize an awareness of potential scene hazards.
  • Classify knowledge and skills to properly perform the initial patient assessment.
  • Assess a patient with traumatic injuries.
  • Assess a patient with acute onset medical complaints.
  • Develop the ability to perform a more comprehensive detailed physical examination on a patient with medical and/or trauma related illness/injury as applicable.
  • Create an assessment-process to identify trends in a patient's condition.
  • Simulate the components of a communications system, radio communications, communication with medical direction, verbal communication, and interpersonal communication.
  • Classify the various components of a written report, special considerations regarding patient refusal, the legal implications of the report and special reporting situations.
  • Characterize special patient populations specifically related to geriatrics and pediatrics.
  • Characterize the basic knowledge of pre-hospital pharmacology.
  • Explain respiratory emergencies from illness, disease and/or trauma related complications.
  • Classify related emergencies and care including CPR/AED, chest pain, CHF and pericardial tamponade.
  • Assess a patient with altered mental status, identifying the signs and symptoms related to cerebral vascular accident (CVA), transient ischemic attack (TIA), diabetes mellitus and seizures.
  • Identify a patient suffering from an allergic reaction.
  • Explore the signs and symptoms related to poisoning and/or overdose.
  • Ascertain the signs and symptoms related to heat and/or cold exposure.
  • Analyze behavioral related emergencies and pre-hospital treatment and handling of the emotionally and/or mentally disturbed patient.
  • Explain the anatomy and physiological changes that occur during pregnancy.
  • Identify signs and symptoms related to "acute abdomen".
  • Assess proper field treatment of patients suffering from central nervous system related disorder including, cerebral vascular accident (CVA), transient ischemic attack (TIA) and seizure disorder.
  • Identify the cardiovascular system.
  • Examine the anatomy of the skin.
  • Classify the pathophysiology of shock and how it relates to patient care.
  • Examine signs and/or symptoms as they relate to musculoskeletal injury.
  • Examine the anatomy of the nervous and skeletal system.
  • Characterize the developmental and anatomical differences in infants and children.
  • Characterize the aging process as it is related to disease and illness.
  • Explore the pre-hospital environment.
  • Assess rescue operations.
