Field Experience (0-3) 3 Cr. Hrs.

Course Description

The field experience class provides students with an opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge learned in the Environmental Studies Program to off-campus work experience in government, private industry or nonprofit organization. Students can also meet the course requirements by completing a service learning project that incorporates an environmental issue. Class discussions include sources of employment in the environmental profession, job applications and interviews and preparing resumes.


(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)

  • Completion of at least three courses in the Environmental Studies Program or the Environmental Science Certificate Program.

Course Competencies

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Identify an internship position for the environmental field experience.
  • Formulate an internship position that meets the needs of the business, nonprofit organization, or governmental unit and expands the student's skill set.
  • Schedule a complex, long term internship position.
  • Establish a collaborative relationship with the instructor and the environmental professionals involved in the field experience.
  • Analyze the marketing and environmental issues related to the field experience.
  • Conduct the necessary research related to the internship position.
  • Effectively communicate the outcomes of the field experience.
  • Use software and hardware appropriate for the internship.
  • Use appropriate environmental sampling equipment for the internship.
  • Demonstrate self-management skills.
