Geographic Methods Applied to Environmental Problems


Course Description

This course is a capstone course for the Environmental Studies Program and applies geographic research methods and geotechnology to solve environmental problems. Development of a project topic, construction of a hypothesis and selection of a research strategy will be accomplished through consultation and faculty-directed study. Synthesis of geotechnology (geographic information systems, global positioning systems, aerial photography and remote sensing) with research methodology is the focus of this course.

Prerequisites

(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)

Course Competencies

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Distinguish between quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • Identify a research problem.
  • Create a research design, using geographic methods appropriate to address the environmental issue.
  • Identify appropriate measurement and sampling techniques.
  • Collect relevant data using appropriate geotechnology for the research project.
  • Analyze the data using appropriate statistical methods.
  • Create a written product of the research results.
  • Establish a collaborative relationship with the instructor to complete the research project.
  • Demonstrate self management skills.
