Building Construction for the Fire Service
This course emphasizes the impact that an understanding of the principles of building construction has on fire fighting strategy. It explains building materials and the processes that are involved in the construction of structures and how they react to fire conditions. It will provide students with the knowledge required to operate safely and effectively within residential or commercial buildings. The course will also discuss actual incidents and case studies containing critical thinking questions that give students a better understanding of what is to be expected in the field.
(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)
Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Explain building construction as it relates to firefighter safety, building codes and firefighting practices.
- Classify major types of building construction.
- Analyze the hazards and tactical considerations associated with various types of building construction.
- Explain the different loads and stresses that are placed on a building and their interrelationships.
- Identify the principle structural components of buildings and demonstrate an understanding of the functions of each.
- Classify occupancy designations of the building code.
- Differentiate between dire resistance and flame spread.
- Explain the test procedures used to establish fire resistant ratings.
- Identify the indicators of potential structural failure as they relate to fire safety.
