Corrosion and Corrosion Analysis
Corrosive processes including electrochemical reactions in metals and the chemical degradation of polymeric materials are emphasized. Topics covered in the course include basic electrochemical reactions, nature of corrosive environments, types of corrosion, laboratory corrosion testing, data analysis, interaction with mechanical behavior and fabricated dissimilar materials.
(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)
Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Explore the basic fundamentals of corrosion.
- Identify the seven (7) commons forms of corrosion.
- Summarize the basic fundamentals of electrochemical reactions.
- Operate corrosion testing equipment in accordance with ASTM and NACE standards.
- Identify the characteristic features of uniform and pitting corrosion.
- Compare the mechanism of galvanic corrosion to the plating process.
- Identify the characteristic features of intergranular and stress corrosion cracking.
- Investigate the mechanism of exfoliation corrosion for both metallic and polymeric materials.
- Investigate the mechanism of crevice corrosion for both similar and dissimilar metals.
- Explore the influence of alloying elements on corrosion resistance of metallic materials.
- Explore the methods of passivation on corrosion resistance of metallic materials.
- Explore methods of surface protection on the corrosion resistance of metallic materials.
- Apply corrosion mechanisms to component failures.
