Maternal-Child Nursing 2


Course Description

This course emphasizes application of the nursing process and critical thinking skills while utilizing evidence-based principles of nursing in caring for the childbearing family and pediatric clients. Theoretical content focuses on complex obstetrical and pediatric health disorders within the registered nurse scope of practice. Clinical experiences with the childbearing family and pediatric clients are provided in acute and community settings utilizing an interdisciplinary collaborative approach.

Course Competencies

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Apply the nursing process to clients with complications of pregnancy.
  • Apply the nursing process to clients with complications during labor and delivery.
  • Apply the nursing process to the high-risk newborn.
  • Apply the nursing process to clients with complications during the post partum period.
  • Apply the nursing process to clients with reproductive disorders.
  • Apply the nursing process to clients with sexually transmitted infections.
  • Apply the nursing process to pediatric clients with altered stages of growth and development.
  • Apply the nursing process to pediatric patients and their families with complex health problems.
  • Apply the nursing process to infant and toddler pediatric clients with complex health problems.
  • Apply the nursing process to preschool and school-age pediatric clients with complex health problems.
  • Apply the nursing process to adolescent pediatric clients with complex health problems.
  • Demonstrate designated clinical competencies.
  • Demonstrate proficiency on select standardized computer assessments.
