Course Description
This is the second course in which students will explore the concepts of singing and musicianship involved in performing choral music composed for chamber ensemble as well as vocal music composed for chamber ensemble. Music of all styles and periods historically appropriate for a choral chamber ensemble will be included. Chamber Singers is an elective for all students, regardless of major field. Additional Chamber Singers credits may be earned in future semesters by enrolling in the following course sequence (one course per semester): MUSIC 224 and 227.
Prerequisites
(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)
- MUSIC 124 or consent of instructor.
Course Competencies
Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate the importance of individual musician's role in rehearsing and performing in a choral chamber ensemble.
- Participate as an individual musician with the leadership and musicianship responsibilities of a soloist in a choral chamber ensemble.
- Develop vocal technique skills that contribute to the overall quality of choral performance.
- Develop a competent level of musicianship that contributes to the overall quality of choral performance.
- Identify the music styles and performance practices of classical and non-classical choral and vocal music literature applied in rehearsal and performance historically appropriate for choral chamber ensemble.
- Identify important choral music and vocal music genres sung in rehearsal and performance historically appropriate for the choral chamber ensemble.
- Sing in foreign languages used in choral music.
- Use the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) to pronounce foreign language texts.
- Formulate a personal artistic understanding of the importance of choral music as an art and the choral ensemble as its process.
