Course Description
This course offers a study of the impact that social changes have had on gender roles, relationships, marriage and family life. Topics covered in the course include diversity in family patterns, gender roles, intimate behavior, mate selection, problems of marital adjustment, family stability and crisis, divorce and parenting.

Course Competencies
Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Investigate the influence of personal biases in the study of marriage and family.
- Examine sociological concepts and theories in relationship to contemporary marriage and family issues.
- Evaluate the validity, reliability, and usefulness of sociological information.
- Identify the traditional and nontraditional marital and non-marital family lifestyles within historical and sociocultural contexts.
- Identify the cultural and subcultural variations in family lifestyles in the U.S.
- Analyze change and cultural variation in mate selection.
- Determine the impact of social class on marriage, family size, socialization patterns, values and family relations.
- Interpret research data related to family issues and problems.
- Outline key stages of the family life cycle.
