John Trudell, one of the founders of the Michigan Jazz Festival, is a musician whose professional career has spanned fifty plus years and involved many facets of the music business.
One of the finest trumpet players in the music industry today, he is also a music contractor and a respected big band leader. He has performed with the big bands of Tommy Dorsey, Sam Donahue, Tex Beneke, Bob Crosby, Ray McKinley, Ralph Martieri, and Quincy Jones.
He was lead trumpet for Motown Records, and recorded with such artists as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, The Four Tops and many more.
As musical contractor for Detroit's nationally recognized Fox Theater, Johnny and his orchestra have backed many great performers and played for numerous Broadway shows.
