Electronic Portfolio Program

Benefits

The Electronic Portfolio is designed as part of a larger system used at different levels throughout the college. The portfolio defines a number of required elements that must be included. All in all, the required elements help you to present your knowledge, skills, attitudes and ability and demonstrate your achievements effectively.

People are coming to recognize that a transcript or resume by itself does not really tell much, and your interview would probably make a stronger impression if you could actually demonstrate what you can do, rather than just talk about it.

  • Potential employers are beginning to consider Electronic Portfolios — being able to present yours may well give you a “leg up on the competition.”
  • Some transfer institutions are also starting to consider portfolios in the admission process. Schoolcraft College itself is moving to use Electronic Portfolios in “authentic assessment” a more accurate indication that students truly have acquired the knowledge and skills their grades suggest.

Your Electronic Portfolio is a way to showcase evidence of your abilities and achievements. In digital form, the portfolio allows you to demonstrate writings, projects, creations and presentations in a highly portable format, adaptable even to the Internet. Beyond the college’s use of sample Electronic Portfolios to assess program-level achievement, you may apply your Electronic Portfolio as you determine:

  • To seek employment
  • To seek advancement
  • As a supplemental to transfer applications
  • As a detailed record of your personal accomplishments

You may discover that your Electronic Portfolio will become a life-long project, useful throughout your career. By starting it now, you’re getting in on the ground floor.

To acquire further training and assistance in creating your Electronic Portfolio, a class is available—Collegiate Skills 111—a 7-week course specifically designed to help you organize and begin construction of your electronic portfolio. (Some program courses such as ENGR 100 also offer an introduction to the Electronic Portfolio).

Schoolcraft College is in the process of establishing a center where students may find the facilities, resources and assistance to guide and help them through the creation of their Electronic Portfolios. In the meantime, feel free to contact any of the individuals listed under “Important Information” who could help you with your questions about the Electronic Portfolio.
