Pageturners, Schoolcraft College's book discussion group, will present the movie Tootsie on Thursday, August 16, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. as part of the group’s Summer Classic Movie Series. The movie will be shown in the McDowell Center on the college's main campus in Livonia.

Tootsie is a 1982 American comedy film that tells the story of a talented but volatile actor whose reputation for being difficult forces him to go to extreme lengths to land a job. One of the touchstone movies of the 1980s, Dustin Hoffman stars as an out-of-work actor who disguises himself as a dowdy, middle-aged woman to get a part on a hit soap opera. The scheme works, but while he/she keeps up the charade, Hoffman’s character comes to see life through the eyes of the opposite sex.

The movie stars Hoffman and Jessica Lange, with a supporting cast that includes Teri Garr, Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, Geena Davis, Bill Murray, and producer/director Sydney Pollack. Lange won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. The movie earned a total of ten Academy Awards nominations. In 2000, the American Film Institute ranked Tootsie as the second funniest film of all time.

The movie presentation is free and open to the public. During the summer months Pageturners travels back in time to experience the timeless classics of cinema, focusing on films made 20 or more years ago. Pageturners traditional book discussions, which are also open to the public, will resume this fall. Books that will be discussed include "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" by Mark Haddon in September; Thomas Pynchon's "The Crying of Lot 49" that will also include a Panel Discussion opportunity in October; and "Losing Alicia: A Father's Journey After 9/11" and a possible Meet the Author event with John L. Titus in November.
