Tests give college credit for selected classes

More than 6 million Americans have taken the CLEP test since it started in 1967. Schoolcraft College is one of 1,300 sites that administer both the College-Level Examination Program or CLEP and the DANTES Subject Standardized tests. Students can take these tests, and if they pass, they are awarded the number of credits they would earn in a comparable class.

Students take CLEP and DANTES tests to save time getting a certificate or degree, to save money, and sometimes to reflect the knowledge they gained from life experiences. They might be students who are home schooled, students earning a degree at an online university, adult working parents, or freshmen who want to opt out of basic classes. Test takers usually have to do some independent study first. Websites for both tests recommend preparation materials.

Persons interested in taking the CLEP or DANTES should talk to a counselor. At Schoolcraft, CLEP is administered twice a month for a $60 fee, and DANTES is given the second Saturday of each month for a $70 fee. Schoolcraft accepts credit hours earned through these tests, and many four-year institutions also accept the credits, especially if they are part of an associate degree.

Schoolcraft ranks nationally among the top 100 institutions administering these tests, in terms of the number of test takers. Approximately two-thirds of Schoolcraft students who take the tests pass them. For more information, talk to a counselor or the Testing Center staff.
