Theater auditions January 23 and 24

Shakespeare takes center stage in Schoolcraft College's winter term production of Measure for Measure. Auditions are Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 23 and 24, at 7 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building Theatre, and are open to all students and community members. Actors will rehearse for seven weeks, each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7 to 10:30 p.m.

First performed in 1604, Measure for Measure cannot easily be labeled as either tragedy or comedy. The play takes place in Vienna, where the duke feigns a trip away from the city while disguising himself as a friar to spy on his deputy, Angelo. Angelo, who strictly enforces immorality laws, sentences a young nobleman to death for fornication. Only if the nobleman's sister, a novice nun, agrees to sleep with Angelo will he spare the nobleman’s life.

The resolution of this dilemma and the just rewards for the hypocritical Angelo form the crux of the plot. The play will be preformed as dinner theater March 30 and 31 and April 6 and 7, and as theater only March 23 and 24. For more information, contact Prof. James Hartman at 734-462-4400, ext. 5270.
