Music is in the air

   Throughout the month of April, music lovers will have several opportunities to enjoy a wide range of musical stylings. Recitals and concerts include: Honors Recital, April 11; Collage Concert, April 12; Free Noon Concert Series performance, April 16; and Friday Evening Concert Series on April 18.
Honors Recital, April 11
   The highest rated performers from the Schoolcraft Piano Honors program involving students from students in the first through twelfth grades will perform a free recital on Friday, April 11 at 7 p.m. in the Presentation Room of the VisTaTech Center.
Collage Concert, April 12
   The annual Collage Concert featuring the college’s various performance groups will be Saturday, April 12 at 8 p.m. in the DiPonio Room of the VisTaTech Center. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and students with ID, and $3 for children.
   The college’s Choral Union, Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, Synthesizer Ensemble and several piano soloists, including two 11-year-old students from the Piano Academy, will perform.  Throughout the evening guests will enjoy everything from classical selections from Haydn, Schumann and Hanssen to traditional songs like “Stars and Stripes Forever” and the spiritual “Hush! Somebody’s Calling My Name,” to compositions that have gained recent notoriety from movies, including “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd” and several selections from “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
Noon Concert Series, April 16
   Baritone Stephen Lusmann makes a return appearance at the college as part of the annual Free Noon Concert Series on Wednesday, April 16. He will be joined by pianist Logan Skelton. Both performers have received national and international acclaim. In addition to hectic touring schedules, both are instructors at the University of Michigan School of Music. 
   The concert will feature the premiere performance of Skelton’s “Ohr Songs,” a cycle of 18 pieces combining songs with piano interludes, set to the texts of George Ohr, an American artist from the turn of the 20th century. This free concert will begin at noon in the Presentation Room of the VisTaTech Center.
Music of Brahms, April 18
   Fans of classical music, especially the compositions of Johannes Brahms, are in for a treat when pianist John Ellis and violinist Yehonatan M. Berick perform on Friday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Presentation Room of the VisTaTech Center. Tickets are $20 ($10 for students with ID) and include a reception following the concert.
   The evening’s selections include Sonata No. 1 in G Major, Op. 78; Sonata No. 2 in A Minor, Op. 100; and Sonata No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 108. Tickets for the performance are $20 and include a reception following the concert.
Berick is in high demand internationally as soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. His busy concert schedule has already taken him throughout North America, Europe and Israel. Classical music enthusiasts throughout the United States, Finland and Germany have enjoyed Ellis’ piano performances as a soloist, lecture-recitalist and collaborative artist for years.
