On Monday, March 23, Grande will participate in a Pageturners book discussion at 6:30 p.m. in the Bradner Library. On Tuesday, March 24, she will interact with students and faculty during a Poster Display and discussion from 8 to 9:20 a.m., also in the Bradner Library. The author’s visit will culminate in a special discussion and book signing event on March 24 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Presentation Room in the VisTaTech Center. The public is welcome to attend and all of the events are free.
Across a Hundred Mountains illustrates the perils of crossing the Mexican and United States border. It explores the trials and tribulations of immigrants, the heartbreaking cycle of poverty and the fractured family ties and identities of those who make it to the other side. Across a Hundred Mountains was inspired by Grande’s own life story and experiences as her parents left her family, when she was one-a-year old, to seek work in the United States. Grande was raised by her grandparents in Mexico until she came to the United States at the age of ten. She is the first member of her family to obtain a college education. A much sought-after speaker, Grande lives in LosAngeles with her husband and two children.
Grande received the American Book Award and El Permio Aztlan Literary Award for Across a Hundred Mountains and the book is now a required read in core courses at University of California Santa Cruz Porter and Kresge Colleges. Her second book, Dancing with Butterflies, is due for release later this year.
Schoolcraft College is a public two-year college, offering classes at the Livonia campus, Haggerty Road between Six and Seven Mile Roads, at the Radcliff Center in Garden City, just south of Ford Road between Wayne and Merriman Roads, and online at schoolcraft.edu.
