Upcoming concerts celebrate sounds of the season
Schoolcraft College’s Music Department is wrapping up its fall and winter season concert schedule with three more unique concerts in December.
Bach Honors Recital, Friday, December 11 at 7 p.m. Winners of this year’s Bach Honors Competition for piano students age 8-18 will perform a free concert in the VisTaTech Center on the Schoolcraft College’s Livonia campus, Haggety Road between Six and Seven Mile Roads. Nearly 100 area piano students were nominated by their piano teachers and those with the highest scores from last week’s auditions will perform. All musical selections must be compsed by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Sing New Songs Choral Concert, Sunday, December 13 at 4 p.m. The Schoolcraft College Choral Union will perform with the St. Valentine Catholic Church Choir during this free concert to be held at the church, 25881 Dow in Redford (south of Five Mile Road and east of Beech Daly Road). The audience will enjoy and ecletic array of selections including works by Mozart, Schuetz, Stephen Foster, and Coldplay along with a variety of holiday-inspired songs. The Schoolcraft Choral Union will perform under the direction of conductor Jonathan Drake and will be accompanied by Melanie Jim. Kevin Cushman will conduct the St. Valentine Choir.
Winter Concert featuring Jazz and Synthesizer Ensembles, Monday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m. Schoolcraft College’s Jazz Ensemble, Synthesizer Ensemble and Jazz Combos from the college’s Improvisation Class will perform a free concert in the VisTaTech Center on the college’s main campus in Livonia, Haggerty Road between Six and Seven Mile Roads. The concert will feature an original composition, Michael: The Warrior from the Archangels Suite for Jazz Ensemble, by Dr. Riccardo Selva, director of the Jazz Ensemble. Guest performer is Bill Cairo, drummer for the Johnny Trudell Orchestra. Other selections include a variety of classic, contemporary, and holiday inspired works along with student compositions and arrangements. The concert is free, however donations are welcomed and will be used for student scholarships for the college’s Music Department.
