"Motown Burning" author to visit on March 25

On Thursday, March 25, 2010, author John Jeffire will visit the Schoolcraft College campus to discuss his awarwinning book, "Motown Burning." The discussion will be held in the VisTaTech Center located on the college's main campus in Livonia, on Haggerty Road between Six and Seven Mile Roads.

Set in part in Detroit late in July of 1967, the city is boiling over. For Aram Pehlivanian, aka Motwon, the Grande Ballroom and the music of the MC5, Iggy Pop and the Temptations no longer provide a haven as destruction engulfs his city. However, escaping death in the streets during the 1967 Detroit Riots only leads him to the jungles of Vietnam and away from Katie, the girl who might be his salvation. Beaton on the streets of Detroit, hunted in the jumgles of Vietnam, and fueled to survive by the music of the Motor City, Aram burns with one goal--to see Katie again.

Jeffire's visit to the campus also coincides with a special exhibit, "The Smoldering Fire of Civil Unrest: A Look at Detroit in the late 1960's," on loan to the college from the Detroit Historical Museum. The exhibit is open Monday - Friday, 10 a.,m. - 4 p.m. in the lower Waterman Wing of the VisTaTech Center. In addition, the hours of the exhibit will be extended on the day of Jeffire's visit to 6:30 p.m. for those who would like to view the displays prior to the start of the author's presentation.

In addition to Jeffire's visit, the Pageturners book discussion group will also have two other discussion sessions: Monday, March 22 at 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday, March 23 at 1:30 p.m. in the college's Bradner Library.
