Schoolcraft College’s Math Team Wins First Place in Midwest Competition

Schoolcraft College’s Math Team won First Place in the Student Math League Contest, beating our 50 other colleges from 18 different states representing both the Midwest and Central regions. This win represents the best showing ever by the college’s Math Team. This annual competition is organized by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC).
“Each of the two rounds of the contest (held in October and in February) consists of a gruelingly difficult 60-minute, 20-question test,” said Michael McCoy, mathematics instructor at Schoolcraft and the Math Team’s coach and moderator. “The maximum possible score for each contestant is 40 points for each round. The top five eligible scores from each college are totaled to determine the college’s final score.” Schoolcraft finished the competition with a total of 190 points, followed by perennial Student Math League Contest regional winners, The College of DuPage, with 185.5 points. Oakland Community College was the second highest scoring college from Michigan with a total of 124.5 points.
A total of 65 Schoolcraft students entered the competition, which is organized and supported on campus by the Math and Physics Club. The students whose scores were tabulated for the college’s final scores were Daniel Bihn, Alex Wheeler, Chaitanya Kanitkar, Kirtana Ghandikota, Jay Raina, Dustin Roose, Robert Gandolfo, Neelima Goyal, Alexander Theodorakakos and Peter Jiang. Jiang was also recognized for his individual effort for the highest overall score in the state of Michigan and in the Midwest. He is a senior at Northville High School and is dual-enrolled at Schoolcraft College.
The Math Team’s scores also resulted in a 23rd place finish at the national level amongst the 191 teams that competed, the team’s best showing at the national level as well.
