In honor of Schoolcraft College’s 50th Anniversary, students are giving back to the community by sponsoring and participating in a Mini-Relay for Life to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. On Monday, October 24, 2011, from 6 – 11 p.m. students, along with staff, family, friends, and the community, will be walking the main campus in Livonia.

Schoolcraft students have been forming teams and collecting donations for several months in preparation for the event. “It’s a great opportunity for the students to make an impact on the community, as well as aid in the fight against cancer,” said Rochelle R. Robinson, member of Phi Theta Kappa and coordinator of the Mini-Relay. “The students feel good about themselves knowing they are doing something to help others.”

Students are hoping to raise $10,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society. The event will also feature live music throughout the walk to keep participants motivated. Featured bands include Chuck Taylor and the Converse All Stars, Flutter and Wow, and The Bungo Band. Refreshments will also be available.

In addition to the Mini-Relay for Life event the Student Activities Office and Board will be sponsoring a special edition of the Blizzard of Bucks game show competition from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Blizzard of Bucks is the country’s most popular college campus game show that pits students against each other in crazy activities to win a chance to step into the whirling money machine and collect as much prize money as possible. While enjoying the fun entertainment of Blizzard of Bucks, students will also be treated to traditional anniversary cake and ice cream courtesy of Henry’s Food Court and the college’s Food Services department.

The college’s commemorative Historical Displays, featuring 12 departments and programs from across campus, will also remain on display and open to students and the general public in the VisTaTech Center until 2 p.m. on Monday, October 24.

The college was founded on October 24, 1961 by a public vote of citizens residing in the five public school districts that comprise the college’s service area: Livonia, Garden City, Plymouth-Canton, Northville, and Clarenceville.
