Internationally renowned cellist to perform Dec. 7

On Friday, December 7, 2012, cellist Suren Bagratuni will perform as part of the Friday Evening Recital Series at Schoolcraft College. The performance will begin at 8 p.m. in the VisTaTech Center on the college's main campus in Livonia. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students with identification. Winner of the Silver Medal at the 1986 International Tchaikovsky Competition while still a student at the famed Moscow Conservatory, Bagratuni has gone on to a distinguished international career as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician.

Born in Armenia, he has performed extensively throughout the former Soviet Union and worldwide, earning enthusiastic praise in both traditional and contemporary repertoire. Selections for the December 7 concert include: Handel's Sonata for two cellos and piano in G minor, Op. 2 No. 8; Stravinsky's Suite Italienne; Sonata for two cellos in G minor by J. Barriere; Schumann's Adagio and Allegro Op. 70; and Sonata in D minor, Op. 40 by Shostakovich.

In addition to his international performances, Bagratuni currently serves as artist-teacher and professor of cello at Michigan State University College of Music. He is a member of the Nobilis and artistic director of the Cello Plus music festival.

Bagratuni's performance is the second in the Friday Evening Recital Series. Remaining performances include violinist Yehonatan Berick on March 15 and pianist Flavio Varani on April 19, 2013.
