Schoolcraft Scholars get involved

Schoolcraft students who chose to be part of Schoolcraft Scholars, the college Honors Program, maintain a 3.5 grade-point average while they learn more about the societiy around them, question the satus quo, think critically, work collaboratively, and become involved in the community through service learning projects.

They begin their first semester with a class that examines the individual and community through multiple disciplines. They go on to work with Honors faculty, designing projects that go beyond stated class requirements, hear challenging speakers and take field trips. In their final semester they complete a 25-hour service learning experience.

Projects from 2006 include tutoring at Vista Maria Home for Girls, bringing books to children in Wayne during the summer with the Red Wagon Project and working for the Humane Society. Community partners include Friends of the Rouge, the Plymouth Community Arts Council, Business and Professional Women International, the Red Cross and Cass Community Social Services.

Typical reactions about the program include, “The Honors Progam helped me realize my dream and never look back. It really helped me being around many other students who were so involved,” and the enthusiastic, “Schoolcraft Scholars rocks — What a great opportunity to learn through service.”
