Public Safety Director institutes changes

In the 10 years that John Monge has been Schoolcraft’s director of public safety, the campus has been fitted with a new alarm system, every door has new locks and keys, each room has a new security system that responds to an employee identification badge, and the cameras in the buildings and parking lots have been upgraded and updated. A new fire alarm system is in the works that will allow Public Safety to speak to everyone in every building should there be an emergency such as a chemical spill or dangerous weather condition. For six years, officers have maintained a campus bicycle patrol that has been well received.

Monge’s staff of 10 full-time and five part-time officers patrol the Livonia campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All are certified to administer CPR and use automatic electronic defibrillator devices. Several officers have emergency medical technology training, and teach CPR and first aid. Defibrillators are in each building, there are 93 first aid kits and 250 fire extinguishers on campus that Public Safety maintains. Officers are grained in ground fighting and handcuffing techniques since they are unarmed.

Under Monge, there are now 30 staff members who are trained and certified as part of community emergency response teams, able to assist if there was a local disaster. Public Safety is involved in disaster preparedness, including updating the disaster manual and holding table top exercises for administrators. Officers are on duty at campus events such as commencement, help students and staff with dead batteries and automobile lock-outs, and operate the campus lost and found.
