Teaching Excellence celebrated

Michelle Randall’s Schoolcraft story is a prime example of all the right things coming together at the right time. In 2000, while nearing the end of maternity leave from her corporate accounting position with an area accounting firm, she was asked to take on a temporary, but full-time teaching assignment in accounting. She had been teaching night classes at Schoolcraft for two years and found she enjoyed that environment and was ready for a change from the corporate world of accounting. When the opportunity arose shortly thereafter for her to become a full-time member of the faculty, she jumped at it.

Connecting with students, one-on-one, whether in the classroom or teaching online is a very important component to her success. She makes a point of knowing every student’s name and noting that she knows when they are in class and when they are not, which she believes makes them feel more comfortable about asking questions and really participating in class. Michelle also admits that a significant benefit she sees to teaching is the opportunity it gives her to continually learn. Having always been known for her inquisitive nature, her continual effort to improve her own teaching strategies helps to satisfy her own love of learning.

Michelle’s NISOD statement captures the essence of her teaching philosophy and success. “A great teacher is part scholar, part cheerleader, and part friend. I love the energy that is generated by students learning new ideas.  Every time I enter the classroom it is a privilege; it is an opportunity to transform a life and ignite a passion for learning.”
