October is Depression Awareness Month - Learn more Oct. 9

October is National Depression Awareness Month. Throughout the month, organizations and communities across the United States will be informed of the signs and symptoms of depression and the availability of free anonymous behavioral health screenings.

Schoolcraft College is also participating in these awareness efforts. The college's Counseling Department, SC Cares program and Phi Theta Kappa are sponsoring a Depression Information Session on October 9 and Depression Awareness Screening on October 15.

During the Depression Information Session, Tuesday, October 9, 2012, from noon - 1 p.m., students, staff and the community can learn about the signs and symptoms of depression; what to do if a friend or family member is affected; information about suicide prevention and awareness; other behaviors related to depression; and resources that are available and where people can seek help. The information session will be held in the McDowell Center.

On Monday, October 15, free and confidential Depression Awareness Screenings will be available from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the McDowell Center. Appointments are not necessary and those who are interested can stop by and talk with a counselor to discuss their own concerns or concerns for others; take an optional assessment; hear testimonials from others who have overcome depression; and learn more about resources and where to seek help.

There is also a free and anonymous online screening assessment available at http://www.mentalhealthscreening.org/screening/Schoolcraft.
