School-age children and parents can learn more about piano instruction programs at Open House on Mar. 23

Students don’t have to be college age to study piano at Schoolcraft College. In addition to the traditional college-level courses and adult performance groups, the college’s Music Department provides a variety of programs including piano instruction for students in grades 1-12;  a Summer Piano Camp for mid-elementary to advanced level children; and a certificate program for piano teachers.

On Sat., Mar. 23, 2013, from 2 - 5 p.m. children and their parents are invited to attend an Open House to learn more about Schoolcraft’s Summer Piano Camp (Jun. 24-28) and the college's Piano Academy (32 weeks beginning in Sept.).  Guests will be able to meet with Piano Academy teachers and hear current Academy students perform. The Open House will be held in the Forum Building on the college’s main campus in Livonia, Haggerty Road between Six and Seven Mile Roads.

The Summer Piano Camp, Jun. 24-28, includes classes in composition, theory, technique, sightreading and music history. Participants will have the opportunity to create music using technology, perform solo repretoire and piano duets, attend Master classes and faculty recitals, and provide a closing recital on Jun. 28.

The Academy begins in September and runs through the school year with 32 weeks of group and private lessons for students in the first through twelfth grades.  The program offers comprehensive instruction in sight-reading, keyboard theory and rhythmic skills along with performance opportunities.
