Make your own kind of music

If you want a job in the production end of the music business or want to produce your own CDs, it's time to register for the Recording Technology Program at Schoolcraft. You can earn a one-year certificate or an associate degree, and move from there to setting up a home studio. You also will be qualified to work in commercial studios or post-production houses doing soundtrack work for film and video.

Students learn recording fundamentals and techniques in small classes on state-of-the-art recording and mixing equipment in the music technology lab. They visit area recording studios and learn to create music using a musical instrument digital interface, or MIDI, which connects a musical instrument to a computer and allows you manipulate the sounds digitally.

To be an effective recording technologist, students also learn about music. They take classes such as Keyboard Skills for Recording Engineers, Basic Materials in Music Theory and Sight Singing and Ear Training. These required music classes will help you understand what the performer is experiencing and improve your skills as technician.
