Volunteers wanted for MLK Day of Service project
Schoolcraft students and faculty will be volunteering at Fisher Elementary School in Redford January 16, 17 and 19 in a special Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service project. Volunteers and donations are needed to make the Bright Colors Bright Futures project a success.
At least 100 volunteers are needed to help beautify the upper hallway of Fisher Elementary School and paint value words on the walls to encourage and inspire the students to enjoy learning and to seek higher education. Parents and teachers of students who attend Fisher Elementary will also be participating in the weekend of activities.
While previous experience is not required, those with experience in painting, creating and using stencils, or graphic arts are encouraged to lend a hand on one, two or all three days of the project.
In addition to volunteers, Bright Colors Bright Future coordinators Kyla Pope and Tiandra Gunn-Bennett, Schoolcraft students and Campus Engagement Fellows, are seeking donations of food and drink items or funding to provide meals for volunteers for the three days of activity.
MLK Day is a national day holiday that inspires all people to make a difference in the community through service. Bright Colors Bright Futures represents a new partnership between Schoolcraft College and Redford Community Schools. It is one of five projects in the state and is sponsored by Michigan Campus Compact through a Learn and Serve grant.
