John R. Elkins sworn in as Trustee

LIVONIA – At its regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, the Board of Trustees of Schoolcraft College welcomed John R. Elkins as its newest member. Elkins was sworn in as a trustee by the State Representative John Walsh, former Executive Director of Development and Government Relations for the college.  
Elkins was appointed by the Board of Trustees on November 5 to fill the seat left open by Mary Breen’s decision to retire from the board after serving for more than 28 years.
Elkins has served on the Schoolcraft College Foundation Board of Governors since 2004. He is the President of JR Elkins & Associates, Inc. and currently serves as Community Liaison for Senior Services with St. Mary Mercy Hospital. He studied business management and administration at the University of Detroit-Mercy and the University of Michigan, and earned a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Upper Iowa University. He is the past President and CEO of Dearborn Financial Services and the Dearborn Federal Credit Union.
A resident of Livonia, Mr. Elkins has been actively involved in the Livonia Rotary Club, the Mayor’s Task Force on Roads, and as a Precinct Delegate for the 11th Congressional District. In addition he has served on the boards of the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan, PSCU Financial Service Centers (Tampa, FL) and Henry Ford Hospital.
On November 5, the board also appointed Douglas H. Adams, Ph. D., to fill the seat currently held by board chair Gregory J. Stempien, who plans to step down from the board at the end of this year. Adams will be sworn in at the board’s January 25, 2012, meeting.
Board seats have six-year terms. The seats being filled by Elkins and Adams have terms that end on December 31, 2012. Both men have stated that they intend to run for full terms in the November 2012 general election; those terms begin January 1, 2013.
            The seven-member Board of Trustees serves as the college’s policy-making body. To be considered a candidate for the position, an applicant must be a registered voter and a resident of the Schoolcraft College district, which includes the Clarenceville, Garden City, Livonia, Northville, and Plymouth-Canton school districts and part of the Novi school district.
