English language learners have day and evening options for classes

LIVONIA, MI – According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Wayne County Quick Facts report, just over 12.5% of households in Wayne County have another language other than English spoken in the home. Some of the members within these households may need English language training and Schoolcraft College’s Continuing Education English as a Second Language (ESL) program has expanded their offerings to accommodate the growing needs of the community.
Schoolcraft’s ESL program allows students to learn the English language in a low-stress, friendly learning environment with professionals guiding them every step of the way. These interactive classes are taught by instructors who are dedicated to help their students reach English proficiency. Several different classes are offered, including Accent Reduction classes, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Preparation, and five levels of English as a Second Language day and evening classes. “ When you help to change a student’s life in this way, you contribute to their family, workplace, and community,” says Heather Rawat, ESL program coordinator.
Registration is underway for winter 2012 classes that begin the week of January 21. For more information on the English as a Second Language program call 734-462-4448 or visit www.schoolcraft.edu/cepd/esl.
Schoolcraft’s ESL program is open to students in all walks of life. A class might include English language learners who are homemakers and want to better converse with teachers and doctors; workers who want to succeed on the job; or small business owners. One of the many benefits of these classes is the camaraderie that develops. Many students have remained friends long after their classes end. Students seek a sense of belonging and better understanding of different cultures. They understand that these are key to developing intercultural competence.
Schoolcraft’s ESL program continues to garner praise by students and the community. Leslie Petty, assistant dean, says, “These classes are invaluable. We see the change in students. Their smiles widen and their confidence grows as they continue to learn the English language. We are proud to be a part of that.”
Schoolcraft College is a public two-year college, offering classes at the main campus in Livonia, Haggerty Road between Six and Seven Mile Roads, at the Radcliff Center in Garden City, and online at www.schoolcraft.edu.
