How to Appeal Property Taxes

Over the last several years homeowners have grown frustrated as their property tax rates still reflect property values from before the bottom dropped out of the housing market. As homeowners realize they could be overpaying on their property taxes by thousands of dollars, some hire a lawyer to litigate their appeals process. This can be an expensive proposition.

Schoolcraft’s Continuing Education and Professional Development department has a less expensive option – a How to Appeal Your Property Tax Assessment class. The cost for the class, which will be held Thursday, February 23, 2012, from 6 - 8 p.m., is $29.  It will be taught by a former Board of Review member. Students will what a property assessment is, how to determine grounds for appeal, documentation necessary to support your appeal, the hearing process, and post hearing relief.

“Schoolcraft College is in a position to give homeowners a leg up in this cumbersome process,” says Jennifer Bodurka, programming coordinator.  “If anything, our class will give people good knowledge on how to proceed and what courses of action are available.”  Counties across the nation are seeing these appeal cases skyrocket. According to MSNBC, 60% of the nation’s taxable property might be over-assessed.  The appeals process is notoriously complicated and can be seen as an uphill battle.  Schoolcraft College one-day class can assist homeowners who are struggling.
