Hospital residents train in Schoolcraft's simulation lab

Published: 4/3/2012

LIVONIA - For the second time this year, resident physicians from St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia made use of the Health Professions Simulation Lab at Schoolcraft College.

The lab uses high-fidelity interactive mannequins to give health care students and professionals a variety of clinical experiences in a series of controlled scenarios. The mannequins present symptoms and respond to treatment. The high-fidelity mannequins include the Laerdal Sim Man, Noelle, a mannequin that depicts the birth process, and Hal, a newborn infant that breathes and cries. All of the mannequins can be programmed to respond to students' interventions.

"This lab was created to serve community partners as well as Schoolcraft students," said Marie Siegel, MSN, RN, who coordinates the lab. "We've made the lab available to professionals from several local health care facilities and we look forward to more of these partnerships."
