A solution to "Summer Learning Loss" and keeping middle and high school kids engaged
Published: 5/15/2012
"Summer learning loss” refers to the academic skills and knowledge that students typically lose over the course of summer vacation. Although the loss in learning varies across grade level and subject matter, numerous studies indicate that students score lower on standardized tests at the end of the summer than they do at the beginning of summer (on the same test).
Schoolcraft College has a viable solution with their Kids on Campus academic skills classes for middle school and high school students. These interactive, engaging classes are designed to motivate students to learn and prepare them for academic success.
“Summer learning loss is very real and has important repercussions in the lives of children,” said Heather Rawat, Program Coordinator with the college’s Continuing Education and Professional Development department. “Our summer program allows students to be engaged in subject matter while still having fun in learning communities. Plus, these camps are from 9am-noon so they still have time to have fun and enjoy most of their day.”
The Kids on Campus week-long summer academic classes are offered July 9 – August 3 and are taught by professionals and content experts in a dynamic and diverse social environment. The academic classes are specific to individualized subject areas in English, reading, math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and science as well as camps focusing more broadly on enhancing study skills. Students will learn organization, time management, test taking strategies and enhance their content knowledge, setting down a solid foundation for greater success in the classroom. These camps provide structured opportunities for a unique, on-campus learning experience.
Registration is going on now. Schoolcraft College is a public two-year college, offering classes at the Livonia campus, at the Radcliff Center in Garden City and online at www.schoolcraft.edu.
