Schoolcraft’s Empty Bowl Project Raises Funds for the Hungry

Published: 10/13/2006

Schoolcraft College’s Empty Bowl Project raises funds for St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen to help feed the hungry in Detroit. Each year, students in ceramics classes donate bowls and other pieces to the project. Anyone who purchases a bowl receives a bowl of soup, a piece of bread and a cup of water, a basic meal but still more than many people enjoy on a daily basis.

On Thursday, Oct. 17, about 200 ceramic pieces will be on sale in the Wilson Room of the VisTaTech Center between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The pieces are the work of Robert Bielat, adjunct ceramics instructor, and his students. They include simple and intricate works priced from $10 to $35. In addition to helping the hungry, they make great holiday gifts.

The public is invited to share a bowl of soup, examine the work of students who well could be the area’s future artists, and aid a humanitarian cause. The soup is provided by Schoolcraft’s Food Service and the bread is freshly baked by culinary arts students.

Schoolcraft College is a public two-year college, offering classes at the Livonia campus on Haggerty Road between Six and Seven Mile roads, at the Radcliff Center in Garden City and online.
