How to get information about Schoolcraft College closings during inclement weather
Published: 12/14/2009
During inclement weather, administration will make every effort to make decisions regarding college closings as early as possible when inclement weather is expected. For day class cancellations, notice will be placed on in a yellow box at the top of the homepage of the college's Web site, www.schoolcraft.edu by 6 a.m. For potential evening class cancellations, notice will be placed by 4 p.m. on the Web site. Perodic updates regarding the college’s open or closed status will be made to the Web site whenever possible.
Weather conditions can vary widely, even over a small geographic area. Students must exercise their own judgment concerning their safety, whether the college is open or closed. If a student elects to not attend class they must contact their instructor for direction as to classwork or assignments that were missed.
In addition to the Web site posting information, the following local radio and television outlets will be officially contacted and asked to announce closure information: WWJ-950 AM, WJR-760 AM, WXYT-1270 AM, Fox 2 WJBK-TV, WDIV-TV 4, and WXYZ-TV 7.
You can also receive free emergency alerts via your mobile devices, work and home phones, text messages or e-mail by registering online with the Wayne County Alert System. If you are already registered with the WCAS you should have received a test message from the system last week. If you are not registered with the WCAS, the process is simple, secure and free.
Visit https://wayne.getalerts.org/ to create a username and password by selecting ‘New User.’ If you are a resident of Wayne County you can use your home address, or if you are not a resident of Wayne County, use the college’s address—18600 Haggerty Road, Livonia, MI 48152.
After you have established your username and password, re-log on to the site using that information. On the User Console of the site, select ‘Device Setup’ to choose which types of messages you would like to receive. As prompted by the site, enter the appropriate information for the devices you would like to receive alerts.
Next, select ‘Alerts.’ Choose ‘University Alerts,’ select ‘Next,’ place a check next to ‘Schoolcraft College,’ and select ‘Next’ again to receive alerts pertinent to the college and surrounding area. Once you have made all your choices for alert types and messages for various devices, select ‘Finish.’
