S.A.F.E. On Campus Allies Workshop June 11
Published: 6/1/2010
What is SAFE?
S.A.F.E. (Students, Staff, Administrators & Faculty for Equality) On Campus provides an avenue through which all people can actively show their support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) people. S.A.F.E. On Campus members (or “Allies”) are identified by displaying the S.A.F.E. On Campus placard and/or button in their work or living space. By displaying the S.A.F.E. On Campus placard and/or button, they are visually representing that they are committed to providing a safe haven, a listening ear, and support for anyone dealing with issues related to sexual orientation or gender identity. Students and employees will know that it is safe to be themselves and to talk about issues involving this aspect of their lives.
In order to be a S.A.F.E. On Campus Ally, interested persons must attend a two-hour information session, which provides information about the S.A.F.E. On Campus program, what it means to be an Ally, campus and community resources available for LGBTQ students. A panel discussion with members of Schoolcraft College’s LGBTQ community may also be included. The session emphasizes that this program is not meant to be a substitution for private counseling, nor are Allies being trained to be counselors. The S.A.F.E. On Campus program is designed as a resource and referral program only.
At the conclusion of the program, after Allies sign a S.A.F.E. On Campus Agreement, they are given a placard and/or button to display in their work or living space, as well as a Resource Manual. Allies also sign up to be a part of a S.A.F.E. On Campus list serve to facilitate further education about LGBTQ issues and to keep open lines of communication between all Allies on Schoolcraft College’s campuses.
As a member of S.A.F.E. On Campus, it is not assumed what an Ally’s sexual orientation or gender identity is and this will never be specifically asked. Anyone, regardless of his/her sexual orientation or gender identity, is welcome to serve as an Ally for the Schoolcraft College community.
